Outside of London, Manchester is the fastest-growing city in the UK. It has a young and diverse population, a large and thriving business base, great national and international connections and a vibrant cultural and leisure offer. The City’s economy is rebounding following Covid-19 and the city has ambitious future plans, which are set out in the refreshed Our Manchester Strategy and the city’s economic recovery plan.
Manchester’s Adult Education Service is the largest Local Authority adult education service in GM (Greater Manchester) and one of the largest in the country, with a long track record of providing basic skills & ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages) for adults in the city who need them most. MAES is rated Ofsted “Good” and has a budget in excess of £8m per year, largely AEB (Adult Education Budget). The service delivers learning from 7 local centres across Manchester and is well aligned with both Manchester City Council and Greater Manchester Combined Authority Work & Skills priorities.
MAES works closely with voluntary & community organisations to extend the reach of the service into areas and communities that would not otherwise benefit from adult education. MAES also developed the award-winning “Talk English” programme, using volunteers & staff to support ESOL speakers acquire & practice English in community settings.
Due to the current post-holder retiring, an opportunity has arisen to recruit a new Head of Service for MAES.
We are looking for someone with a background in education and skills, with strong leadership and management capabilities, the vision to take MAES to the next level & become a more agile organisation and the ability to create the right culture for high performing teams to thrive.
You will need to be credible at a strategic as well as operational level and form lasting partnerships with businesses and other key stakeholders in the city, city region and nationally, to maximise the opportunities for Manchester residents.
With persuasive communication skills, you will need to demonstrate your commitment to diversity and inclusion, as well as to your own personal development and continuous service improvement.
This post is also subject to satisfactory references, proof of right to work in the UK in accordance with the Asylum and Immigration Act 1996 and other pre-employment checks where applicable.
