Role: Lecturer – Animal Sciences

Location: Shuttleworth College – Old Warden

Salary/Benefits: Salary is between £31,930 and £36,878 per annum (Pro-Rata) DOE and Qualifications, 45 days annual leave (Pro-Rata) plus Bank holidays, Teacher’s pension, Retail and Leisure Discounts, excellent professional and personal development opportunities, accessing college courses. Note – Salary and annual leave is for that of a Qualified Lecturer.

Hours/Weeks: 22.5 hours per week – 52 weeks per year

About the role:

We are currently seeking a Lecturer in Animal Sciences to join our Animal Sciences department at The Bedford College Group.

As a Lecturer, you play an important role in the success of our students through:

  • Teaching & Curriculum Delivery – Deliver engaging lessons on Animal Science HE courses, develop schemes of work, and create innovative learning materials that meet awarding body standards.
  • Student Support & Progress Monitoring – Track student progress, provide feedback and reports, ensure deadlines are met, and maintain a high-quality learning experience tailored to individual needs
  • Quality Assurance & Course Leadership – Lead course meetings, implement quality processes, contribute to course reviews, and collaborate with the HS Department to maintain academic standards.
  • Professional Engagement & Development – Participate in marketing, student recruitment, curriculum development, and maintain industry knowledge through CPD and collaboration with Advanced Practitioners.
  • Safeguarding, Compliance & Additional Duties – Uphold safeguarding, equality, and health and safety standards; support new staff as a mentor (if qualified); and carry out other duties as required by leadership.

About you:

  • Qualifications & Education – Master’s degree in an animal-related subject; GCSEs in English and Maths (A–C or equivalent) or willingness to achieve Level 2 within one year.
  • Sector Experience & Knowledge – Practical experience in the animal management sector, current industry knowledge, and recent teaching experience with diverse learner groups.
  • Teaching & Curriculum Skills – Proven ability to deliver high-quality learning across FE and HE levels, contribute to curriculum development, and demonstrate strong teaching and administrative skills.
  • Professional Attributes & Values – Strong interpersonal and communication skills, commitment to College values (Student Focus, High Performance, Respect, Openness, Honesty), and ability to work collaboratively and professionally.
  • Safeguarding, Flexibility & Development – Commitment to safeguarding, CPD, flexible working, health and safety awareness, and willingness to travel across College sites.

Shuttleworth College is set within the stunning location of Old Warden Park, near Biggleswade.  It’s a specialist land-based college, offering agricultural and environmental education, alongside animal sciences, equine studies and outdoor adventure all delivered within acres of parkland, farmland, lakes and woodland.
