Functional Skills Teacher – English
Department: Business
Salary: £28,964 to £32,532 per annum
Contract Type: Permanent Full Time

Hours: 37 hours per week

Reference: REC2230 | Closing Date: Sunday, 24th August 2025

The Opportunity

Based in our friendly Business Department, you’ll primarily support our adult learners to strengthen their English skills. Your role involves delivering Functional Skills English qualifications, from Entry Level to Level 2, with a focus on meeting individual needs and promoting progression into employment, further education, or greater independence.

You’ll plan and deliver creative, learner-centred sessions that engage individuals from a range of backgrounds and abilities. Working alongside the Course Leader and vocational tutors, you’ll help embed English into the wider business curriculum where appropriate. Through thoughtful lesson planning and effective assessment, you’ll guide our learners on their educational journey—ensuring they remain motivated, supported, and on track to succeed.

In addition to teaching, you’ll take responsibility for assessing learners’ starting points and tailoring support to help each person overcome barriers to learning. You’ll provide regular feedback, maintain accurate records of attendance and progress, and contribute to quality processes across the department, such as course reviews and standardisation meetings.

You’ll also play a role in curriculum development, taking part in the review and design of new courses, materials, and delivery approaches. With a strong commitment to inclusion, equality, and professional standards, you’ll help foster a positive and respectful learning environment where every learner feels valued and capable of achieving their potential.

This is a great opportunity to be part of a supportive team, where collaboration is encouraged and your ideas for improving delivery and engagement will be valued. With the freedom to design creative and tailored lessons, you can bring your own teaching style to the classroom while helping learners grow in confidence and ability.

There may also be opportunities for progression into GCSE English teaching roles within the department, making this a great next step if you’re looking to expand your teaching portfolio or take on new challenges.

About You

You’re someone who’s passionate about adult education and genuinely motivated by helping people improve their confidence and independence through English. With experience teaching Functional Skills English—ideally from Entry Level to Level 2—you understand how to engage learners from a range of backgrounds, and you know how to adapt your teaching to suit individual needs and goals.

You’re confident in planning and delivering creative, learner-centred sessions that bring English to life. Whether you’re supporting learners with their everyday communication skills or preparing them for employment or further study, you approach teaching with flexibility and empathy.

You hold a recognised teaching qualification (or you’re working towards one), and you’re experienced in using assessment and feedback to track progress and maintain motivation.

Collaboration is something you value. You work well with colleagues and you’re open to embedding English into the wider curriculum where appropriate. You bring a positive, solutions-focused mindset and a willingness to share ideas and try new approaches to delivery and engagement.

If you’re looking for a role that allows you to make a real difference—and where your creativity, care, and teaching strengths will be valued—this is a great opportunity. You may also be interested in the potential to progress into GCSE English teaching within the department as you grow your skills and experience.
