Role: Learning Mentor

Location: Bedford College – Cauldwell Street Campus

Salary/Benefits: Salary is between £24,720 and £29,870 per annum (Pro-Rata) DOE and Qualifications, People’s pension, Retail and Leisure Discounts, excellent professional and personal development opportunities, accessing college courses.

Hours/Weeks: 37 hours per week – 40 weeks per year

Contract Type: Permanent – Term Time

About the role:

We are currently seeking a Learning Mentor to join our Student Services department at The Bedford College Group.

As a Learning Mentor, you play an important role in the success of our students through:

  • Pastoral & Academic Support – Provide pastoral care and mentoring to students, especially those at risk, supporting their personal, social, and academic development through early interventions and motivational meetings.
  • Attendance & Progress Monitoring – Track and challenge attendance and punctuality, implement timely interventions, and contribute to improving college success rates by supporting student engagement and retention.
  • Collaboration & Communication – Work closely with curriculum staff, parents, and external agencies to ensure appropriate support is in place, while maintaining accurate records and reporting on student progress and interventions.
  • Student Development & Wellbeing – Support students with UCAS, apprenticeship, and job applications; manage wellbeing concerns by signposting to internal and external services; and contribute to induction and enrichment activities.
  • College Engagement & Compliance – Participate in open days, ID checks, exams, and meetings; uphold safeguarding, equality, and health & safety standards; and actively engage in training and development aligned with TBCG values.

About you:

  • Qualifications & Development – Educated to Level 3 with relevant qualifications, including GCSEs (A*–C) in English and Maths, and evidence of recent professional development in education or support-related areas.
  • Experience & Knowledge – Strong understanding of post-16 education, safeguarding, the Prevent agenda, and equality and diversity, with experience supporting learners in school or college settings.
  • Communication & Interpersonal Skills – Excellent verbal and written communication, rapport-building, and motivational skills, with the ability to engage effectively with young people and a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Organisation & Adaptability – Highly organised, detail-oriented, and able to manage sensitive data, prioritise tasks, and adapt to changing demands in a fast-paced environment.
  • Professionalism & Commitment – Demonstrates integrity, flexibility, and a commitment to safeguarding, continuous improvement, and the values of The Bedford College Group, with the ability to travel and work varied hours as needed.
