Northern College for Residential Adult Education
Principal & Chief Executive
With a mission ‘To provide outstanding adult residential and community education for the empowerment and transformation of individuals and communities’, Northern College is dedicated to the education and training of men and women who are without formal qualifications and are seeking to return to learning.
The college is one of four English long term residential colleges and offers a full-time access to HE course for 60 to 70 students, a range of 3-5 day intensive residential courses for a further 4000 students, and training for those who are active in community and voluntary groups as well as in trade unions. Many of the college’s students face multiple challenges, in particular socio-economic disadvantage and exclusion.
The college, founded in 1978, is located in Barnsley, in South Yorkshire, where it occupies Wentworth Castle, a Grade I listed country house located within the grounds of the Wentworth and Stainborough Gardens and Park.
Under the leadership of principal, Jill Westerman, the college has consistently been judged to be outstanding by Ofsted and in its last inspection in 2014 achieved Grade 1 outstanding for all areas, with no areas for improvement.
Jill is retiring in 2018 and the board of governors now seeks to appoint a visionary new leader who has a passion for transformational adult and community based education, strengths in institutional leadership, an understanding of operating in a highly diverse environment and a commitment to external engagement and community partnership.
As our next principal, your understanding of teaching and learning and focus on quality will ensure current standards are maintained. At the same time, you will explore new strategies to leverage our exceptional achievements and exploit new channels and platforms to take our mission to a wider national and international stage. An expert people manager, who is comfortable engaging with staff, students and governors alike, you are also an influencer who is comfortable engaging with a variety of high profile partners and agencies, both locally, nationally and internationally.
