NFER is the UK’s leading independent provider of education research and analysis. It is a not for profit organisation with an income of £18 million and 210 staff. Our research, assessments and other services are widely known, highly respected and used by key decision makers in the UK and internationally. Helping to improve the lives of children and young people is at the heart of everything we do.

We are seeking to appoint enthusiastic and committed Trustees to support our purpose of providing robust evidence to improve education. This is an exciting opportunity to help develop and grow NFER and increase our impact on outcomes for children and young people. The new Trustees will work with the newly appointed Chair of the Board, Lorna Cocking, with other Trustees, with the Chief Executive and the staff of NFER, all of whom have a wide range of expertise and experience.

Applicants should have a strong interest in the contribution research and assessment can make in improving the effectiveness of education and children’s services. The key qualities we are looking for are: the ability to operate at a strategic level, offer key insights into the business, provide constructive challenge to help grow the business, help us think in creative and innovative ways, and to have and develop networks to help raise our visibility.

Recent experience and expertise are sought from senior managers / Directors in one or more of the following areas: education (as a Headteacher or system leader); commerce and international; and finance.

Trustees are responsible for agreeing the aims and direction of the Foundation and for ensuring it delivers the charitable outcomes for which it has been established. You would be expected to attend Board meetings four times a year at NFER’s Head Office in Slough and to be a member of a Board Committee or working group. There is no fee but travel and other expenses are reimbursed.

NFER is an equal opportunities employer, welcoming applications from all sections of the community, and a registered charity (No 313392).
