Founded in 1677, as one of the oldest state schools in the country The John Roan School has a distinguished history of supporting educational excellence for the young people of Greenwich.
We believe that education should be a positive and transformational experience, regardless of ability or background. We are fully committed to raising achievement for everyone and have the highest expectations of all our students in every aspect of school life. Our vision is for students to be the best that they can be, and our role is to provide them with the platform to achieve this.
At The John Roan School we pledge to provide a rich, broad and varied education such that all students are able to make excellent progress whatever their starting points. We have a split site, with a new, state-of-the-art building at Westcombe Park and a dedicated sixth form centre on the historic Maze Hill site. Students at The John Roan School also benefit from access to Braithwaite’, an activity centre in the Lake District and extensive playing fields and sport facilities, as part of our commitment to providing an education with character.

United Learning
The John Roan School is part of United Learning, a large, and growing, group of schools aiming to offer a life changing education to children and young people across England.
Our schools work as a team and achieve more by sharing than any single school could. Our subject specialists, our Group-wide intranet, our own curriculum and our online learning portal all help us share knowledge and resource, helping to simplify work processes and manage workloads for an improved work-life balance.
As a Group, we can reward our staff better: with good career opportunities, better pay, benefits, and ultimately, the satisfaction of helping children to succeed. We invest in our staff wellbeing. Our academies each have at least eight INSET days per year (with three of those solely dedicated to planning), and an ongoing group-wide wellbeing programme. It’s an ethos we call ‘the best in everyone’.
We are working hard to become a more diverse organisation – which is key to our commitment to bringing out the best in everyone. We welcome applications from everyone committed to this ethos and would particularly welcome applications from black and minority ethnic candidates, who are currently under-represented in the Group as a whole. We always appoint on merit. We are open to discussing flexible working options.
